Jason and I arrived home almost six weeks ago. Our trip to China was an emotional but exciting journey. There are things about that trip that I’m still processing – all that was lost and redeemed. Now that we are home, we are settling into a “new normal.” Instead of boring you with lots of details about our life, I’d thought I would share some pictures.
Because she isn’t talking, not even in Mandarin, we’ve decided to try sign language. She is doing great with “more” and “eat.” Of course both are associated with food – her favorite thing ever!
My little helper. She is learning how to be the big sister, which means she gets to help mommy more. She is LOVING that!
My cool dude LOVES his new sister! He has by far had the easiest adjustment to her.
Jack has been such a big help since coming home. He is looking (and acting) so old!
Titus just lays in the floor with her sometimes and it melts my heart!
Her favorite thing to do is put toys in and out of buckets!
We’ve started the soccer season – so the girls are cheering the boys on the sidelines!
We are so excited to have our China-girl home. I do not want to miss telling you all of the progress she has made since coming home with us in these short few weeks. Here are a few praiseworthy notes!
1. When she first came to us, she could barely chew! She loved to eat, but had a hard time with solid food. She is still a great eater and is doing much better with chewing. She eats more than my four-year-old it seems!
2. She could barely sit or even crawl while we were in China and her head control was extremely lacking. She will now sit, crawl, and roll around with ease. She even started going from her belly to a sitting position this week!
3. When we first got home, she would just stay in the spot I would lay her. She would sit there (or fall over and lay there) until I came and moved her. Even though she could crawl, she would just fuss and whine until I came to pick her up. Now, she will roll/crawl to where she wants to go. Mostly that was just to me. She would just come to wherever I was – in the kitchen. Yesterday, I caught her on the opposite side of the room from where I had set her down. She had crawled right to the toys! What a joy to see her start to be comfortable enough to move around in the living room! And I was so excited to see her move toward the toys to find something to play with! Here is the picture I snapped:
4. When we first arrived home, Emmalia was extremely jealous. We knew it was going to be that way and prepared for it. She is doing much better! She knows mommy will cuddle her and love on her, but doesn’t need mommy to do it ALL of the time. She is happy to play by herself without mommy and THAT is a big step as well!
Not everything is perfect. Even though she is making progress, we have a long way to catch-up. I will be honest – it is hard some days. It is hard to have a child who is behind and needs catching up. It is hard to comfort a child who is still very hesitant to open up to us. Adoption is hard (and not just the waiting). We rejoice that she is making progress, for we see His hand in all of this.
