Breathe In Trust

waiting woman3

We have tried to grow apple trees twice in the past ten years.  They’ve never produced fruit for us.  Not because my husband didn’t try, nor is it because we haven’t had enough rain or good soil. We’ve done all the right things, but we have deer. We live in what would be considered the city. A suburb of the capitol of our state. Home to over 100,000 people.  It seems there are just as many deer.  We’ve come to recognize the usuals and their appetite isn’t just for grass or my flowers.  It seems they love the sweet taste of apple trees.  They have eaten four saplings we’ve planted in the past few years. We’ve put them in our yard, which is fenced in. We’ve placed chicken wire around them. Still, they are persistent and I don’t think I’ll ever get a single fruit from those poor trees. We can do all the right things in our life and still not produce any fruit.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. “ – Jeremiah 17:8-9

Do you notice that we usually focus our attention on what not to do? Don’t associate with sinners. Ok, got it. Don’t sit with those that scoff God and His Word. Ok, check. Read my Bible. Check. Pray. Go to Church. Check. Check. But that doesn’t meant we will automatically produce fruit.  It says that the man who is like a tree, producing fruit, will be delighting in God’s Word. Spending time in prayer, mediation, and study of God’s Word is the way to produce fruit. Not just checking it off a list, making it such a part of our life, we place all our heart’s trust in Him.

It isn’t just about working and striving. No amount of effort on my part, reading my Bible, praying, going to church, or singing the songs will bring my life fruit if I am not trusting God.

Jeremiah 17:8 – Blessed is the man whose trust is in the Lord.

Our hearts can breathe in trust. We can find relief from our anxious thoughts because we recognize it is God who grows us. We simply trust.  We balance our life of study and prayer with trust.  While we wait, we trust. Trust our God who will bring forth the fruit of our season. So, today…..

breathe in trust

  1. Wow Sarah, there is so much truth here. Trust has always been hard for me but God is doing a work in me and I know he’s not finished yet. I am learning to let go and trust more and more each day. It’s so easy to fall into that pit of striving, isn’t it? Thanks for your life-giving words here. Blessed to find you at Holley’s today.

    1. Its so hard to trust…..oh my! But yes, resting and trusting go hand-in-hand! We don’t need to “strive” to trust, but let God work in our hearts.

  2. I’ve had to undo that mentality that I can work for God’s approval. I’m so glad that’s not true, but, goodness, it’s been such a journey to undo that natural tendency of mine! Have you read “Love Idol” by Jennifer Dukes Lee? It’s a fabulous book on that subject – one that really encouraged me. Thanks for linking up at #ThreeWordWednesday.

  3. Thank you for this reminder about trusting the Lord. I am an anxious person – this has been a life long struggle. Worrying about the future and not finding the joys/blessings of the current time.

  4. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on trusting God. It’s easy to trust when the skies are blue, but only when the waiting comes do we know how strong our faith really is. Blessings to you.
