READING YOUR BIBLE in 2016
“Now, some people think the Bible is a book of rules, telling you what you should and shouldn’t do. The Bible certainly does have some rules in it. They show you how life works best. But the Bible isn’t mainly about you and what you should be doing. Its about God and what he has done. Other people think the BIble is a book of heroes, showing you people you should copy. The Bible does have some heroes in it, but (as you’ll soon find out) most of the people in the Bible aren’t heroes at all. They make some big mistakes (sometimes on purpose)….No, the BIble isn’t a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story…..You see, the best thing about this Story is – it’s true.” –
the story of God’s love for you

As 2016 begins, maybe you have some goals and dreams. Some resolutions. Maybe your New Year’s Resolutions include reading your Bible more. Maybe you want to study it and find your strength and peace in the pages of Scripture in 2016. If so, maybe you are like me: It seems so big. Where do you start?
We can start at the beginning. I don’t mean Genesis. When we want to read more of the Bible, it doesn’t matter where you start. It matters that you start. Let me encourage you, each Tuesday, with some practical help in redoing or restarting your Bible reading and studying.
Today, let’s start with this:
JUST READ IT
It doesn’t matter if you’ve read it for 7 months or 27 years. Let me share with you these THREE methods:
- Read your Bible in a year. You can read through the entire Bible in one year by reading three-four chapters a day. Click here for some One-Year Reading plans.
- Read through a book a month. Choose a book of the Bible to focus on for a month. A good one to start with is Proverbs. You can read one chapter a day. There are 31 chapters in Proverbs. Perfect to begin. Jot down notes and thoughts as you go. You can also choose a short book, such as Titus or Ruth. Only a few chapters, you can read a few verses day. Or you can read through the book everyday for a month. Looking at the details and focusing on the themes.
- Read three chapters a day. Read a chapter in the Old Testament. A chapter in the New Testament. A chapter in Psalms and Proverbs. After you’ve read through Psalms and Proverbs through, begin again. It only takes fifteen minutes (or less!) to read three chapters a day. I keep track of the chapters I’m on in the back of my Bible with a post-it. You can also keep a journal or notebook to record your thoughts.
Remember, Bible study begins with this first step: JUST READ IT!
