Jesus Doesn’t Want Your Money

A man asked Jesus, What do I need to do for enteranl life? Jesus’ response was, Keep all of the commandments. The man answered Jesus, All these I have kept. What do I still lack?

All his life he desired to do the right thing, choosing an outward life of sacrifice, only to find himself still empty. So he went to the Teacher. Surely he had missed a commandant. Maybe there was something more to do. Imgaine the man’s disappointment when he realized he had done it all.

Jesus tells him the missing piece: If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. Follow Jesus. Surrender all he had, all his good deeds, the years and years of doing the right thing, and give it all away…..to follow. Jesus wasn’t asking the man for his money. Jesus told him to give his money away to the poor. Jesus didn’t want the man’s riches, He wanted the man’s life.

The Teacher than turned to His disciples. As they pondered how to get to heaven with no money, He told them: But many who are first will be last and the last first. In God’s kingdom everything is upside down.  The last will be first in line for the eternal reward.

As I read those words, I realized no amount of money I give, service I perform, or platform I build – even if it is all for Jesus’ name – is what Jesus really wants. At the end, Jesus would rather see an empty life. A life devoid of wealth, a record book of good deeds, or merits. Jesus wants for me (and you) a life with an eternal reward waiting for us.

Just as Jesus wasn’t asking the rich young man to give money (HE HAD!), Jesus was asking him to live like a servant. Come, and follow Me. The man walked away in shame and sadness because he wasn’t willing to sacrifice that one last thing: his own will.

Jesus asks us: Come, follow Me. A surrendered life means developing an abiding life. This life is waiting for all who surrender to Jesus.

All to Jesus surrender.
All to Him I freely give.
I will ever love and trust Him.
In His presence, I will (daily) live.

**Edited to add: I believe God has called (even commanded) us to give our money. I am not discouraging giving. Obviously we are raising money to help fund our adoption. The point of this article is to emphasizes the fact that sometimes we (Christians) think God just wants our money, but He really wants so much more…..He wants our lives surrendered to Him.

  1. Amen Sarah! Such true words you share here. God wants our heart. When we hear the word surrender it can be scary but there is such freedom to serve Him when we surrender to Jesus! We can never out give Him and all He does for us. May we always be willing to surrender to Christ daily. I hope you have a wonderful week and may God bless you and yours!

  2. Yes and amen! The story of the rich young ruler confounded me for a long time, but the Lord has brought it up so often this year clarifying for me that it’s about surrender to Him to follow Him. Thanks for joining in the clarity and speaking this essential truth!

  3. I love the truth spoken here as I know I have fallen into the trap of wondering what it is I can do for God, what money to give but God is still faithful and always reminds me to remain in Him.
