Set the timer….Go!
Ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved to talk. Not so much in front of people, but around and through people. I like to contribute to conversations, be interesting and entertaining. Maybe I talked as a little girl because the roots of a the first-born tendency to lead were ingrained so deep.
Either way, talking is still something I love to do. Through words I can express, create, and inspire and encourage. Listening isn’t something that comes natural. Yet listening is exactly what God has called me to do since July and the She Speaks Conference. At the conference, I felt the first pull towards just listening. To hearing others and letting others talk. Its hard. It takes more effort.
Maybe that’s why God keeps putting me in places where I have to listen. Not talk. And at first I thought, How can I contribute if I don’t speak? How will they know my thoughts or ideas if I don’t speak up? Then, it hit me. Listening is a huge part of contributing to a conversation. A conversation, whether online, in a text message, and in person always takes a certain amount of listening. So when I listen, I am still a part of the conversation. I don’t have to have a voice to be a part of the conversation.
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. James 1:19
God has called me to be slow to speak and quick to hear. Quick, ready, always prepared to listen. Am I too quick to offer my opinion when a crisis strikes? Am I so ready to give advice, instead of just hear the tears on the other end of the line?
May God continue to work a listening spirit in me.
