Confront. Ugh, such an ugly word. So many of us (ME!!) do not like to confront people. My first thought, when I saw the word confront, was remembering the time I had to confront a friend. In the end, I was desiring to follow scripture in helping a friend see a sinful area in her life. I tried to offer her protect, but instead lost her respect, and ultimately friendship. It was horrible experience. And I’m sure I would do things differently a second time around, but one thing I would not do differently was stay silent.
Non-confrontation means staying silent. Sometimes it is very necessary NOT to confront. It takes wisdom, prayer, counsel, and more prayer to make the decision to confront a friend. So, when I feel like I should say something, I evaluate the decision before I say anything.
I’m bad about saying what’s on my mind, and that’s no Biblical confrontation either. The Scripture is clear, we are to help bring back our brothers and sisters straying. But, we aren’t the only ones in people’s lives. So sometimes we need to say something. Sometimes we need only pray. And sometimes God is going to lead us and guide us to gently come alongside someone ad love them.
Love is the root of confrontation. If there is someone today who needs some words of encouragement, correction, or help in discernment – spend some time in prayer for that person. And ask the Lord to give you a heart of love – above all – LOVE.
Confronting without love is missing the point. What about you? Have you ever had to confront someone? How was it received? Would you do things differently a second time around? How?
