One of my favorite things to do on Sundays is teach the missionary story to the kindergarten-sixth graders. So far we’ve completed the stories of Mary Slessor and John Patton. Each missionary provides a story full of mystery, excitement, and adventure. I never want to mislead the children in thinking missionary’s led these ideal lifestyles.
I tended to do that as a child, dreaming of becoming a missionary only because it seemed like the most exciting thing ever. Instead, I’ve grown in love with these stories because of the fact that they were real. They faced real loneliness, hardships, and danger – but instead of running home, they ran ahead. They had a view of God so much higher than we tend to believe.
I read a short devotional on John Patton, and surprisingly he was a very strong Calvinist. He believed in election 100%. Instead of using this conviction to keep him from going to tell others (God was going to save them anyway…..) he went in absolute confidence God would protect, work, and save these “heathens.”
I aspire to rest so fully in the sovereignty of God that I live my life in confidence of Him. His absolute goodness. His absolute power. His absolute authority, over all things. It is the way a missionary can keep having a global mindset and keep moving forward. I love this quote by Oswald Chambers:
He does not say the heathen will be lost if we do not go; He simply says – “Go ye therefore and teach all nations.” Go on the revelation of My sovereignty; teach and preach out of a living experience of Me.
