Start the timer for 5 minutes….begin.
I haven’t finished a book in forever. I’ve started reading about 5 books. Never to finish them. Until this past week. I began and finished reading Shauna‘s book, Present Over Perfect(affiliate), in one week. Yes, it is very unusual for me to finish a book in one week. But I felt a pull to keep opening her book. It was like my heart was craving the message she had to share. I felt just like her neighbor. Sitting on the edge of the lake, with our feet prompt up, coffee in hand, our breath exhaling in laughter and tears.
It stopped me short when I read these words:
Christians ought to be decidedly anti-frantic, relentlessly present to each moment, profoundly grounded and grateful. Why, then, am I so tired?….These days, I’m not looking for more crusade against or for, but trying to reimagine my faith as a soft place, the antidote to my addition, not the enabler.
The soft place is what I am missing. The place where I can breathe in and out. It is the daily I am letting passing by without even a notice. I’m caught up in checklists, deadlines, plans, and dreams, I forget about reality.
Reality is sitting in the floor playing Monopoly Jr. Reality is remembering to cook a little extra dinner for our widowed neighbor. To encourage the young momma next door with cookies and smiles and invitations to come play. If I want to live in the daily, I need to start with today.
Today I can relearn the patterns from the inside out, as Shauna would say (see, I feel like we are already neighbors). I can see how changing my frantic into slow paced is only done by turning around and looking inside.
If you want a chance to be the neighbor of someone sweet, sassy, and a little bit of a hippie, find yourself a copy of Present Over Perfect and pull up a chair. Then, come back over to my place here on the inter-webs and let me know what you think of her soul-book.
Something special happens in October. A community of bloggers and writers gather for 31 Days of Writing. For an extra little challenge, I’ll be also participating in 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes.
31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes is a “challenge within the challenge,” so to speak — namely, to post on your blog every day in the month of October, but to write each post in only five minutes flat.
If you are interested in joining the fun, check out Christina’s page here.
Here is the list of the word prompts for 31 Days of Five Minute – Free Writes.
