Start the timer for 5 minutes….and start!
This was a hard word today. I struggled with just finding the right words to describe a wardrobe. I thought of my pieces of clothing and how some don’t fit, some are out of style, and some just are too fancy for my ordinary life.
Then I thought about clothes, and what we wear. And I thought about how Paul talks about what we put on and take off. We need to put on the fruits of the Spirit and take off the fruits of the flesh.
Then, I thought about the famous passage, quoted in Proverbs 31: She is clothed in dignity and strength (Proverbs 31:25). And how we all secretly wish we could be this woman, and secretly cry inside because we believe we will never be this woman.
This proverbs 31 woman who has it all together. Or so it seems. This proverbs 31 woman every single blog seems to be writing about. Everyone has their opinions about her. Yet here I stand, whispering the words: dignity and strength, wishing these things for my life. Then I read the next verse:
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. Proverbs 31:26
Ouch. It stings deep in my heart. I hear the gentle whisper of my Savor, Do you want strength and dignity? Speak kind words. Give wisdom.
O how that reaches this word-lover. To reach deep inside myself to muster enough strength and dignity will never be enough. I cringe because I know deep down I’ll never be able to do it.
Yet, Jesus is calling me out of this land of never and into the land of needy. Yes, I’ll never be enough, but that doesn’t mean I stop trying. It means I will lean more deeply into my need and search the scripture for Truth. In the truth I find the strength and dignity.
Need is the beginning of strength and dignity. Needing my Savior leads to strength. Needing my God leads to dignity. So today I clothe myself with need.
Something special happens in October. A community of bloggers and writers gather for 31 Days of Writing. For an extra little challenge, I’ll be also participating in 31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes.
31 Days of Five Minute Free Writes is a “challenge within the challenge,” so to speak — namely, to post on your blog every day in the month of October, but to write each post in only five minutes flat.
If you are interested in joining the fun, check out Christina’s page here.
Here is the list of the word prompts for 31 Days of Five Minute – Free Writes.
