Psalms to Help You Fall Asleep

A few months ago I was laying in bed. It was late. Past midnight. I was wide awake, thinking about my life. I mean ALL OF THE THINGS in my life were swirling around in my brain. I tossed. I turned. I ate a Tums.

The next thing I knew it was 2 am.

I went downstairs to eat a cookie and drink some milk. It didn’t help. I was up until 3 am, just thinking about the most random things……

Do you ever have a night like this? Where you can’t get to sleep because so many thoughts are going around and around inside your mind?

It happened the next night and I was beyond exhausted.

On the third night of the SAME THING, I decided to recite Scripture in the dark. I’m ashamed to say I couldn’t remember a lot of passages. But I the ones I did remember were the Psalms. So I just repeated the verses I knew over and over in my brain.

It worked. I could feel my pulse slow, and my brain knew to slow down and relax. I asked God to help my heart and help me sleep. Do you need psalms to help you fall asleep?

One of the great reasons I love the Psalms is the ability to help calm my spirit. When my eyes are darkened by the hurt of this world, or deep inside myself, through it all I can see God more clearly when I recite His Word. And His Word is the key to help me  fall asleep at night. I’ve decided to write down the Psalms that help me find rest when life is overwhelming, or when I can’t shut off my brain, or just when I need some extra peace. I’ve been using these Psalms for the past few weeks. I try to pick one of the week and put the card beside my bed at night. I look over it a couple of times, reciting it while the light is turned on and my husband is brushing his teeth. I then use it through the day as well. One verse a week is more doable for me to memorize.

In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety. Psalm 4:8

  1. Love the verse cards! Very clever! And I couldn’t fall asleep last night, so very timely for me.
    Happy Tuesday!

  2. The Psalms are my go-to. Love, love, love them! You are so right Sarah. They are calming and just permeate me with peace, strength and comfort. Your printable is beautiful:) Thanks for this lovely post!

  3. What a fantastic idea! I think we’ve all had nights like that. Reciting Scripture, specifically Psalms, is such a beautiful way to calm our spirit and help us rest.

  4. Love this idea so much! The Psalms over so much value to the Christian reader (along with all the entire Bible)! I think this is a brilliant post!

    God bless,
    Patty

  5. I love the printables. I am printing them out, trimming them, and mailing to a family member – I know they will minister to her. THANK YOU. And, I linked up!!!

  6. Hi Sarah, I just finished reading through the Psalms again and love your post! I actually just wrote about some of them on my blog. : )

Love the printable too. What a great idea!

I’m new here and I linked-up. I’ll add your site to my link-up page. Found you through the ‘Coffee for your Heart’ link-up.

  7. Love these collection of scripture, Sarah. I too a lot of midnight thinking … and tossing. It’s often conversations with the Lord, where I ask Him to take all that’s burdening me, that help me finally fall asleep. That and Tylenol PM. 😉 But Psalms are a beautiful place to meditate any time of day! Glad to visit from #tellhisstory.

  8. I have heard that Psalms are wonderful to read to de-stress before bed. My go-to verse for when I can’t fall asleep is Isaiah 26:3. I meditate on each word, and it’s like magic. I even wrote about it because it is so effective. God’s Word never fails.

  9. When I was a teenager, there were quite a few nights where I couldn’t sleep, so I would recite the twenty-third Psalm, and I would get sleepy just like that.
I like your printable. I wish I could figure out how to do printables on my site. I tried designing one on Microsoft Word, but if I try to cut and paste, only the bare bones transfer, none of the frills.

  10. Love Psalms! My Mom had very bad scoliosis and underwent a lot of tests. When she would be fearful during an MRI, she had Dad read her Psalms. They are so calming!

  11. I suffer from chronic insomnia please pray for me to be set free from it..
Thank you and God bless you
