5 Reason Why I Get Up Early

Confession: First of all, friend…..this certain Daylight Savings year has been TOUGH. That first night, let’s be honest, I had plans to go to bed “on time…” But then “Oh yay! An extra hour (not to sleep) to stay up!” It is so weird, but I had such a hard time waking up early after that!

Before all of this crazy Daylight Savings Time, I had gotten into a wonderful habit of getting up early. In fact, I was up an HOUR before the kids woke up. At one point I was enjoying TWO cups of coffee before they scurried downstairs. These past few weeks have been so hard, I’ve not been disciplined to keep it up.

I am naturally a morning person, but unfortunately I married a night owl. My husband loves to stay up late, so I’m bad about staying up late then struggling with the snooze on my alarm for an hour.

This week, though, I’ve decided I’m giving it another try. My husband went back to work on Thursday and I’ve been faithfully getting up and having those quiet moments before my kids wake up. I need these minutes alone. And let me tell you WHY I get up early:

  1. I work best in the mornings. The simple fact is, my mind is more clear and alert in the mornings. I can think and dream and dwell better, especially when it comes to my time with God. As my own personal conviction (I understand this isn’t for everyone), I’ve decided getting up and doing my Bible study and devotional time is giving God the best of me.
  2. It is quiet. Fact: Kids are loud. Another Fact: When they are asleep, they are not loud. Its simple, I know. But let’s face it. I can’t concentrate with four little ones crowding for my attention. Seasons will ebb and flow as a mother, so early mornings work best right now, when they are all still asleep.
  3. I love seeing the sun in the morning. The time to just sit and sip my coffee in front of our window in the kitchen is divine  The fact that I get to see the sun first thing is wonderful. I notice it. I am still and quiet. And I can see the details on the tress in our woods behind our house. I can be reminded, every single day, that God is faithful.
  4. It helps me start my day off on a good foot. I have not always gotten up early. In fact, since being a mother almost nine years ago, this is the first year I started getting up before them. Mainly because I am now sleeping through the night and also because I need this time. My little ones are demanding, and to have to make time for just me in the mornings. It helps me focus and fill up. When I am filled up, I can pour myself out even better.
  5. I don’t have to “sneak away” during the day for me time. I can be totally present without any guilt if I get up before the kids. I can have my coffee (without reheating it) and I can spend time in God’s Word without trying to fit it in during the day. I am not feeling guilty at 2pm during nap time trying to find a moment of peace in order to read God’s Word.

I completely understand how sometimes we do have to “sneak away” and I’ve lots of tips for how to have quiet time when life is loud. But if getting up early is possible for you, I would highly recommend it! In fact, maybe you already get up early, but lack a little bit of direction on what to do with your time. I would love to encourage you to check out Arabah Joy’s BRAND NEW series starting TODAY.

I found Arabah Joy almost three years ago. I was beginning to immerse myself into the blogging world, and as I began to look around the world wide web, I found her site. I was immediately struck with how BIBLICAL she was and how PRACTICAL she was. I have completed so many of her courses and classes over the past few years. I cannot tell you how much her methods for studying God’s Word has impacted in my own study. Her treatment of the Bible is so genuine, deep, but doable. I especially loved her free “Abide” Mini Series. This series was such an encouragement to my heart when I felt far from God.

  1. I’m an early riser too, with a love of drinking my chai as I sit at the computer and watch the sun rise. 🙂 I’m familiar with Arabah Joy but haven’t taken a course yet. Looks wonderful!

  2. Good for you Sarah. I work best in the morning too. I recall getting up early before my babies would wake up and getting work done. That was a great feeling.
