The morning I saw the spider I read Psalm 85.
Restore us again, O God of our salvation. Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. Faithfulness springs up from the ground, and righteousness looks down from the sky. Yes, the LORD will give what is good.
I woke up early that day. And some reason I was just sitting at my desk. I was waiting for the coffee to brew and I hadn’t yet opened my Bible or even said a few lines of prayer, only “God, be with me today.” It just a reflex prayer, but as I looked up I saw the tiniest spider in the corner of the window. I knew her web was there, but its a pretty big web and I just figured a larger spider lived there.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t normally like spiders, but for some reasons the glass pane makes me feel safe. I stared at her, watching her move up towards the top of the window’s edge. Her body was round and swollen. It was still a little dark outside, but I still saw her in the early morning’s light. The needle legs started moving in a circular motion around and around. Her whole body moved down the invisible thread sewing together her home, making a way to catch her food.
I sat there. Just watching and marveling at the intricacy of her tiny little legs, body, and web forming something so simple but complex. I marveled even more at her Creator. Who knew what she needed and provided for even her. Provided for her a way to create, move, and form. All good things, even for a spider.
Psalm 85 ends with this phrase, “Yes, the LORD will give what is good.” Give us what is good. But what? Just the basics, like the spider? A place to live, ability to work and eat and live? No. We are worth more than the tiny spider. Although she was surely loving created, God calls us His crown of creation. The top and most treasured of all the creatures. In Psalm 85 I see three things God gives us that are good.
1. He gives us forgiveness. You forgave the iniquity of your people; you covered all their sin. Over and over God forgives His people. He keeps away his righteous wrath from consuming us. We deserve so much punishment. God is both just and merciful. But He loves mercy.
2. He gives us restoration. Restore us again, O God of our salvation. God could have forgiven and forgotten us. He could have provided a heavenly home without Himself. Yet, He restores a relationship. No matter how far you’ve run or how far you’ve gone, you are never too far from God. He will restore again and again and again. (read about my own restoration here).
3. He gives us steadfast love. Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other. In all His words in the Bible, the theme we find hidden, woven through the stories is God’s love for us. It is a steadfast love. A love that will be faithful, true, and provide a way of righteousness and a place for peace to enter our hearts.
As the spider disappear into the corner of the window as the morning’s light shone brighter and brighter, I thanked God for the reminder that He is calling me to create. He is calling me to live out in my life today, a miraculous picture of his forgiveness, restoration, and steadfast love. If I just do what I’m created to do, He will let His light shine through in even the most ordinary of days.
